History of Budget Music
The First Budget Tapes & Records store opened in Denver, Co in 1972. It was a franchise of Danjay Music and Video of Denver. Danjay went on to franchise 90 Budget Tapes & Records stores all over the west, with distribution centers in Denver and Seattle, Washington. In late 1987, the franchisor, Danjay went into bankruptcy and ceased operations. At this time all remaining Budget Tapes & Records stores became independent operators with many retaining the name.
The first Budget established in North Dakota was in Bismarck in February 1977. Other Budgets followed in Minot, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Williston. Only 2 of the 5 remain open, Minot and Grand Forks. Budget Music & Video of Grand Forks opened June 1, 1984. In September of 2003, Budget Music & Video of Grand Forks was bought by Dan Maier, who independently owns and operates the business. The Video was dropped from the name and is now just Budget Music.
